Services

LAP Respite Services are available to families who are caring for their loved ones who have disabilities, chronic illness, or age related conditions.  To register for services, a family will need to call LAP Respite Center at 517-372-6671.  An intake is done with LAP staff and family members to create an individualized plan for care.  This care plan will be a guide to the Respite Care Providers who are trained and employed by LAP to relieve family caregivers.  These services may be provided to families for a few hours or a few days, in the family home or at the Respite House, depending on the need and availability of service options.  Respite is provided by prior arrangement or on an emergency basis for registered families.

1) In-Home Respite

  • LAP Respite Care Providers come into the family home at scheduled times to provide the care necessary for the registered person.
  • Family members have a choice of care providers.
  • Respite Care Providers assist with daily living skills, transportation, and other necessities as directed by the family.
  • Families call to the LAP Office to schedule respite care.

2) LAP Respite House

The LAP Respite House is located in a quiet neighborhood, next to a park in South Lansing.  The Respite House opened in 1995, after renovations to make it accessible for wheelchair use.  It provides a State Licensed Program for four children on the weekends and is open at other times for scheduled overnight services.  The program at the Respite House has trained care providers on duty 24 hours.  Specialized care procedures are provided as well as activities.

3) LAP After School Program

LAP After School Program is a State Licensed Day Care Center for children ages 5 to 26 years who are in Special Education classes.  A daily program planned by the After School Program Director is followed by providers trained in caring for specialized needs.  Children are in attendance from the time school ends until 6:00 P.M. The program includes snacks, music, crafts, outdoor play, reading, games, and other activities.  Activities include a mix of practicing educational learning and socialization skills.

The After School Program maintains a three-to-one student-provider ratio.

4) LAP Respite Care Provider Training Program

In a thirty-two hour training program, new LAP employees will learn about the specialized care needs of people who have disabilities.  Besides learning specific techniques that assist in performing quality care, the requirements of State Licensing, and the ethics of caring for unrelated people, LAP employees will learn the theory and necessity of a job well done.  After the initial training and working with families, LAP Respite Care Providers will enhance their learning by performing continuing education credits each year.
